Callihari.
G.Harikumar is a Bangalore-based calligrapher creating meditations in ink. For him, the art is about attention, not ornamentation. Working primarily in Dravidian script, he experiments with various tools and surfaces to understand letter forms beyond convention.
His relationship with letters began early, shaped by an instinctive attraction to handwriting and the visual rhythm of written language. He formally began his calligraphy practice ten years ago and is largely self-taught, learning through books, observation, and sustained, disciplined experimentation.
Over time, his work has evolved through continuous exploration of styles, tools, and techniques, resulting in intricate letterforms that balance structure with expression.
“The act of writing slows the body and sharpens perception. Each stroke carries intention, resistance, and release.
My practice is process-driven. I experiment with tools, surfaces, and scripts to understand how letters behave beyond convention.
Broad-edge pens, fountain pens, bamboo sticks, ice cream sticks, and found tools allow textures and forms to emerge organically.
Over the years, calligraphy has become a transformative practice one that reshaped how I observe, focus, and express. The work is an ongoing exploration rather than a fixed style.”
